Dear Reader,

In Part 1 of When Forests Disappear, we explored what deforestation means and why the loss of forests reaches far beyond the trees themselves.

We looked beneath the canopy and discovered a world of roots, fungi, insects, birds, mammals, microorganisms, water, soil, and countless relationships.

We also considered what happens when that living system is broken apart.

But understanding loss is only the beginning.


The next question is one that matters even more:

What can we do about it?

Protecting forests is not simply about stopping chainsaws.

It is about making thoughtful decisions about food, land, infrastructure, energy, consumption, conservation, restoration, and development.

It is also about recognizing that people are part of the forest story.

Millions of people depend directly on forests for livelihoods, food, materials, cultural traditions, and community life. Indigenous Peoples and local communities in many regions hold generations of knowledge about forest ecosystems.

A successful conservation strategy therefore cannot simply ask:

“How do we protect the trees?”

It must also ask:

“How do we protect the forest, the wildlife, the water, the people, and the future together?”

There is a simple principle in conservation that deserves much more attention:

Protecting an existing healthy ecosystem is usually better than trying to recreate it after it has been destroyed.

A mature forest may have taken decades, centuries, or even longer to develop.

Its fungi have established relationships with roots.

Its animals have learned where food and water can be found.

Its streams have developed their own patterns.

That is why forest conservation has two important sides:

Protect what remains.

The goal is not to collect more data simply because we can.

What happens to the soil if the vegetation disappears?

There is something humbling about standing beneath an old forest.

The trees may be taller than buildings.

Some may have lived longer than the people walking beneath them.
